SHAW CREEK
My work in 3D archaeology spans archaeological documentation, artifact digitization, replication, visualization, and digital heritage. I have worked with 3D scanning, photogrammetry, LiDAR, digital modeling, 3D printing, mold-making, casting, and virtual reconstruction with virtual reality technologies to explore how emerging and cutting edge technologies can support archaeological research while creating new ways to preserve, analyze, and share cultural heritage. Much of this work has focused on archaeological materials and landscapes from Interior
Alaska, allowing me to combine traditional archaeological questions with digital methods.
Using high-resolution 3D scanning, I have documented archaeological artifacts and transformed physical objects into detailed digital models that can be measured, studied, replicated, and incorporated into other digital environments. My work has included scanning lithic artifacts from Interior Alaska, preparing and processing models, and producing physical replicas through both resin and FDM 3D printing. I have also explored silicone mold-making and casting as another form of archaeological replication, allowing digital documentation to return to physical teaching and research collections. These workflows have become especially important to my interest in creating accessible alternatives for handling fragile or culturally significant archaeological materials.
My 3D work also extends beyond individual artifacts into archaeological landscapes and immersive environments. Through my Senior Thesis which is a digital reconstruction research project for Tangle Lakes, Alaska, I have incorporated GIS data, terrain modeling, archaeological information, and 3D assets into Unreal Engine to reconstruct past landscapes in virtual reality. This has allowed me to explore how 3D visualization can represent archaeological sites and investigate questions of landscape use, mobility, visibility, environmental change, and human occupation. Together, my work in scanning, replication, digital modeling, and virtual reconstruction reflects my broader interest in using technology as a bridge between archaeological research, preservation, education, and public engagement.
